Advocacy Essentials with Citizens for Just Policy and the National Arab American Women’s Association

In Collaboration with Citizens for Just Policy,  the National Arab American Women’s Association hosted a virtual advocacy training on Tuesday June 11, 2024.

This training was a broad introduction and overview of advocacy best practices. Participants learnt about opportunities they have as individuals to make an impact, beyond calling and emailing their representative every day. Topics included:

  • Activism and Advocacy – How They Fit Together
  • Citizen Advocacy – How to Engage Your Representatives Effectively
  • An Overview of Congress – Bills, Chambers, Committees

Synopsis:

The conversation was centered around the importance of advocacy training for the Arab American community, with a focus on framing issues effectively, gathering credible information, and engaging decision makers. Speakers discussed various strategies for advocacy, including nonpartisan advocacy, building relationships with members of Congress, and navigating the challenges of Congress. They also highlighted the role of think tanks, elections, public opinion, and campaign finance in shaping Congress’ decision-making. The conversation emphasized the importance of empathy, coalition-building, and documenting one’s journey to achieve successful advocacy efforts.
